Sole Health and Wellness was started by Jennifer Gill. Originally from New York, her running career began at the age of 12. Sibling rivalry was what really started it all. She was determined to beat her older brother's sprint times when she joined the track team in 7th grade. After high school, Jenn went to George Mason University. Upon transferring to Tempe, AZ, Jenn graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Microbiology. After graduation, she moved to the D.C. area and, after years of doing laboratory research with The Institute for Genomic Research and the American Red Cross, she gave it up to pursue a Masters of Public Health from George Washington University. In 2011, the Gill family relocated from the D.C. area to San Diego, CA.
Jenn's MPH is concentrated in Health Education. Being healthy can only happen when you have the right information. There is a lot of confusing information out there about what to eat, how active you should be, and how that all affects your overall health. Jenn wanted to have this information, not only for herself and her family, but to help others reach their health and fitness goals. She is a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Certified Distance Running Coach. Jenn is also a Licensed Sports Nutritionist, licensed by the National Association of Sports Nutrition. In addition, Jenn is a Certified Personal Trainer, Group Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist and Senior Fitness Specialist, all certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. In addition, she is a certified Level I yoga instructor, specializing in vinyasa. Jenn has coached individuals and running training programs for people of all ages. In addition to coaching her Sole Mates, Jenn also coaches for the online running community, Another Mother Runner, in their Train Like A Mother Club. She currently coaches the Ragnar Relay Challenge programs and co-coaches the STRIDE programs. From coaching a running program for beginners through advanced runners or counseling individuals on bettering their health and nutrition, Jenn has worked with people of all ages and abilities. Together, they develop a plan to eat better, get more active and live a long, healthy life!
Before moving to San Diego, Jenn served as the Director of Marketing and Director of Training Programs at Fleet Feet Sports, Gaithersburg. In addition to coaching groups through Fleet Feet, she also coached with DC Fit training programs. She also helped found, coach and serve on the Board of Directors of Girls on the Run of Montgomery County. Girls on the Run is a non-profit educational program that uses running and training for a 5K as a means to educate and prepare elementary school girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Now Jenn is happy to be a part of GOTR San Diego and serves as the Head Coach of GOTR at San Elijo Elementary. Jenn has been featured on Competitor.com (here is another article), Runner's World (here is another article), Women's Running Magazine, The Fountain (page 11 of the digital issue), The Kentlands Town Courier, The Gazette (here is another article), Blue Ridge Outdoors (scroll down to "Marathon Mistakes"), Spa Magazine, Fitness Magazine, Active.com and the Just Finish online running community, and Jenn served as the local Washington, DC-area running expert known as the D.C. Running Examiner, as well as the San Diego Running Examiner.
When the Gills moved to San Diego, Jenn decided it was time to bring her coaching business to the "next level," as they say. She wanted to offer services not only at the individual level, but also within the community and local businesses. She still offers individual coaching services, to both local and not-so-local clients, but she will also be offering group running programs around San Diego County. Check out our Group Running Programs page to see what programs are available. Stay tuned to our website, Facebook and Twitter for information regarding future programs.
Many people have asked what is the significance of "Sole" and why it was chosen as the name of the company. It isn't really a simple answer. "Sol" is the Spanish word for "sun." When Jenn thinks about her happy place, she thinks of Sunset Beach on the North Shore of the Hawaiian island, Oahu. Jenn and her husband took a vacation there several years ago and when she wants to feel calm, peaceful and content, she think of Sunset Beach. Because this company will focus on improving health primarily through running, Jenn wanted it to reflect her "happy place." Sole represents that feeling of calm, peace and happiness that she felt at Sunset, which she also feels when she runs. So, Sole Health and Wellness was born.
Since I first started running in 8th grade, running has been a constant in my life. Over the years, I have competed in numerous races from 5K to ultramarathons, including several Ragnar Relays and the American Odyssey Relay. I've also tried my hand at triathlon, competing in a few Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. I love the atmosphere and energy at races, as well as the camaraderie found throughout the running community. While competing races is fantastic, helping others reach their goals and experience that feeling of amazement and accomplishment is just as rewarding. I feel privileged to be a part of the journey! I know that my years of coaching experience, personal running experience, and educational background can help you reach your goals and I will do my best to get you there!
